How do I get high-quality backlinks?

Real backlinks come from real relationships, real content, and real PR. Anything that promises “100 backlinks for $99” is junk, the kind that gets your site penalised.

The methods below take months, not days. They also work, and the gains compound for years.

Backlinks that move rankings

Editorial links from sites in your industry. A real journalist citing your work. A trade publication writing about your project. These are gold.

Industry body listings. Your professional association’s member directory. Tradies on Master Plumbers, Master Builders, MEA. Accountants on CPA Australia. Real ranking signal, real referral traffic.

Cross-referrals from non-competitors. Builders link to architects link to interior designers link to landscapers. Each links to non-competing partners. Helpful, ethical, effective.

Partner pages on supplier sites. If you’re a Daikin specialist, Daikin’s “find an installer” page links to you. High authority, high relevance.

Be newsworthy

Original research (even small): “We surveyed 50 Newcastle homeowners about renovations.” Local journalists pick this up. Builds links and relationships.

Build genuinely useful resources

Calculators, comparison guides, industry reports. The kind of thing other sites cite because there’s nothing else like it. Examples: a NSW solar rebate calculator, a stamp duty calculator with 2026 rates, a Newcastle rental yield map.

Pitch guest posts

Industry publications, partner blogs, complementary businesses. Pitch a specific angle, not a generic “I’d like to write for you.” Pitch what you can write that they couldn’t.

Local sports clubs, charity events, community organisations. Often comes with a real link from their sponsor page, plus the goodwill that pays in word-of-mouth.

Avoid like the plague

PBNs (Private Blog Networks). Networks of fake sites that link to each other. Google’s detection is now excellent. Penalties are severe.

Paid “backlink packages”. Anyone selling 100 links for $99 is selling spam. Best case: no effect. Worst case: Google penalty.

Mass directory submissions. Submitting to 200 generic directories. Most are deindexed by Google anyway.

Comment spam. Leaving comments with backlinks on random blogs. The links are nofollow and the practice screams desperation.

Link exchanges. “You link to me, I link to you.” Detectable patterns hurt rankings.

How fast does this work

Effects of new backlinks show 4-8 weeks after the link is indexed. Major editorial links can move rankings within days.

Aim for 2-5 high-quality new linking domains per quarter for a small business. More is fine, but quality matters more than rate.

Track linking root domains in Search Console (Links report) and use a free tool like Ahrefs Webmaster Tools for a fuller picture.
